Dextran is a large sugar molecule. Infused into a vein it stays in the circulation and draws fluid in, which expands blood volume, and in much smaller amounts it is used in eye drops as a lubricant.

What Dextran Is Used For

Expanding blood volume in shock or major blood loss
Improving blood flow in some vascular conditions
Preventing clots after certain surgery
Lubricating eye drops for dry eye

Common Side Effects

Allergic reactions, including rash and itching
Fever and chills during infusion
Effects on blood clotting
Brief blurring with eye drops

Precautions

The infused form is given only in hospital with close monitoring, because allergic reactions can be severe and it interferes with blood clotting and with blood cross matching, so samples are usually taken before it is started. The eye drop form is quite different and is used as a simple lubricant.
