Metronidazole clears the amoeba that has invaded the gut wall and caused symptoms, while diloxanide furoate stays in the bowel and removes the cysts left behind. Using both is what stops the infection from returning.

What Diloxanide Furoate and Metronidazole Is Used For

  • Intestinal amoebiasis, including amoebic dysentery
  • Clearing the carrier state after an amoebic infection
  • Some giardia and mixed gut infections, on medical advice

Common Side Effects

  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Nausea and loss of appetite
  • Gas and stomach cramps
  • Dark coloured urine

Precautions

Alcohol must be avoided during the course and for two to three days after, because with metronidazole it causes flushing, vomiting and headache. Finish the full course even once the motions settle. Boiled or filtered drinking water and hand washing matter as much as the tablets, since reinfection is common where water is unsafe.
