ESOMEPRAZOLE
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces how much acid the stomach produces. It is usually taken before a meal, most often before breakfast.
What Esomeprazole Is Used For
- Acidity, heartburn and acid reflux (GERD)
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
- Part of combination treatment for H. pylori
- Protecting the stomach when taking long-term painkillers
Common Side Effects
- Headache
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Nausea and abdominal pain
Precautions
Esomeprazole is meant for a defined course, not indefinite daily use without review. Taking it for long periods can lower magnesium and vitamin B12 levels and may affect bone strength. If heartburn keeps returning after a course, or you notice weight loss, difficulty swallowing or black stools, see a doctor rather than continuing on your own.
