Isosorbide mononitrate is a nitrate that relaxes and widens blood vessels, easing the heart’s workload. It is used to prevent the chest pain of angina.

- Headache, especially at first
- Flushing

Precautions
Headaches are common when starting and usually settle – do not stop the medicine on your own. This medicine prevents angina rather than relieving a sudden attack. Stand up slowly, and never combine nitrates with medicines for erectile dysfunction, as together they can dangerously drop blood pressure.
