Iron Bis-Glycinate
Iron bis-glycinate is iron bound to the amino acid glycine. That bond protects the iron as it passes through the stomach, so it causes noticeably less nausea and constipation than the traditional iron salts while still being well absorbed.
What Iron Bis-Glycinate Is Used For
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Low iron stores without full anaemia
- People who cannot tolerate ferrous sulphate or fumarate
- Iron support in pregnancy and for heavy periods
Common Side Effects
- Darker stools
- Mild nausea
- Occasional constipation
- Metallic taste
Precautions
Vitamin C improves absorption, while tea, coffee, milk, calcium and antacids reduce it, so space those apart by a couple of hours. Anaemia should be confirmed with a blood test, since the cause matters as much as the treatment and in adults can point to blood loss needing investigation. Keep all iron products well out of reach of children, as overdose is a serious emergency.
