Benzydamine
Benzydamine is an anti inflammatory that also numbs the surface it touches. It is used topically rather than swallowed, which is why it comes as a throat spray, mouthwash, lozenge, vaginal douche and skin cream.
What Benzydamine Is Used For
- Sore throat and mouth ulcers
- Gum soreness and pain after dental work
- Mouth soreness during chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- Vaginal irritation and inflammation, in douche form
Common Side Effects
- Numbness or stinging where applied
- Dry mouth and altered taste
- Nausea if swallowed
- Local irritation
Precautions
Mouth and throat preparations are gargled or sprayed and not swallowed. Diluting a mouthwash with equal water helps if the sting is uncomfortable. It is generally not for young children unless a doctor advises. A sore throat with high fever, drooling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or one lasting beyond a week needs medical assessment rather than a spray.
