Carboxymethylcellulose is a thickened, water holding agent used in artificial tears. It clings to the surface of the eye for longer than plain saline, which is why relief from a dry, gritty eye lasts longer than with thinner drops.

  • Dry eye and a gritty, burning sensation
  • Eye strain from screens, fans, air conditioning and dust
  • Dryness with contact lens wear
  • Comfort after eye surgery, when advised

Common Side Effects

  • Brief blurring after instilling
  • Mild stinging
  • Sticky lashes if too much is used

Precautions

Do not let the dropper touch the eye or lashes, and note the discard period once the bottle is opened. If you need drops more than four to six times a day, preservative free vials are kinder to the eye surface. Redness that persists, pain, discharge or blurred vision is not simple dryness and should be examined by an eye doctor.
