Ampicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin antibiotic. It breaks down the wall that bacteria need to survive, and it is available as capsules, suspension and injection.

Certain gut and hospital acquired infections, by injection

Thrush after longer courses

Precautions

Anyone who has reacted to penicillin before must not take it, and a rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs immediate help. Oral ampicillin is absorbed better on an empty stomach. Complete the full course, as stopping early leaves the more resistant bacteria behind. Tell your doctor if you develop severe or bloody diarrhoea during or after the course.
