Artesunate is a fast-acting antimalarial medicine. It is used, often by injection in hospital, for severe malaria, and in combination tablets for uncomplicated malaria.

What Artesunate Is Used For

  • Severe malaria (injectable, in hospital)
  • Uncomplicated malaria, in combination therapy

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness

Precautions

Severe malaria is a medical emergency treated in hospital – do not try to manage high fever with confusion or breathing trouble at home. For combination tablets, complete the full course exactly as prescribed so the malaria is fully cleared and does not return.
