Bacopa
Bacopa monnieri, known as brahmi, is a long standing ayurvedic herb now sold as a standardised extract. It is taken for memory and mental calm, and studies suggest any effect builds slowly over weeks rather than being felt immediately.
What Bacopa Is Taken For
- Memory and learning support
- Stress and mental fatigue
- Concentration during study periods
- Part of ayurvedic and nootropic formulations
Common Side Effects
- Nausea and stomach cramps
- Loose motions
- Dry mouth
- Tiredness
Precautions
Taking it with food reduces the stomach upset that is its most common complaint. It can add to the effect of sedatives and thyroid medicines, so mention it to your doctor if you take either. It is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Give any trial at least eight to twelve weeks, and treat it as support rather than treatment.
