CALCIUM ACETATE
Calcium acetate is a phosphate binder taken with meals by people on dialysis. It reduces the absorption of phosphate from food.
What Calcium Acetate Is Used For
- Controlling high phosphate levels in kidney failure
- Used with meals by people on dialysis
Common Side Effects
- Constipation
- Nausea
- High blood calcium if overused
Precautions
Calcium acetate is taken with meals so it can bind the phosphate in food – taking it away from meals does not work the same way. Your doctor will monitor your calcium and phosphate levels. Do not take extra calcium supplements unless advised.
