CANDESARTAN + HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE
Candesartan blocks the hormone signal that tightens blood vessels, and hydrochlorothiazide makes the kidneys clear extra salt and water. Combining them lowers blood pressure more than either alone and keeps the number of tablets down.
What Candesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide Is Used For
- High blood pressure not controlled by a single medicine
- Reducing the long term strain of hypertension on the heart, kidneys and eyes
- Fluid retention alongside raised blood pressure
Common Side Effects
- Dizziness, especially in the first days
- Passing urine more often
- Low potassium or sodium
- Raised uric acid, which can trigger gout
Precautions
This combination must not be used in pregnancy, and anyone planning a pregnancy should speak to their doctor about switching. Kidney function and salts are checked with blood tests from time to time. Avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes unless advised, stand up slowly, and keep taking it even when you feel completely well.
