Cetylpyridinium chloride is an antiseptic that disrupts the outer coat of bacteria. It is found in mouthwashes, throat lozenges and sprays, where it reduces the bacterial load in the mouth and helps with breath and sore throat.

Mouthwash for plaque and bad breath
Throat lozenges and sprays for sore throat
Gum inflammation, as an adjunct to brushing
Antiseptic in some skin and nasal preparations

Common Side Effects

Burning or dryness in the mouth
Temporary taste change
Staining of the teeth with heavy use
Mouth irritation

Precautions

Mouthwash is rinsed and spat out, never swallowed, and it is not a substitute for brushing and flossing. A sore throat with high fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or one lasting beyond a week, needs to be seen by a doctor. Alcohol free versions are gentler for people with a dry mouth.
