Activated charcoal is a highly porous form of carbon, often from natural vegetable sources. It binds gases and some substances in the gut.

What Activated Charcoal Is Used For

  • Wind and bloating
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Emergency treatment of some poisonings, in hospital

Common Side Effects

  • Black stools (harmless)
  • Constipation
  • Nausea

Precautions

Activated charcoal can stop medicines and nutrients from being absorbed, so take it at least two hours apart from other medicines. In a suspected poisoning, call for emergency help rather than self-treating.
