Chloral hydrate is one of the oldest sedatives still in use. It calms and induces sleep, and today its main role is sedating children for scans and procedures under supervision rather than as a routine sleeping medicine.

Sedation of children before imaging or minor procedures
Short term insomnia, in selected cases
Settling severe agitation, on medical advice

Common Side Effects

Drowsiness and unsteadiness
Stomach irritation and nausea
Hangover feeling the next day
Paradoxical excitement, particularly in children

Precautions

Procedural sedation is carried out where breathing and oxygen levels can be monitored. It irritates the stomach, so it is diluted well and given with food or milk. Tolerance and dependence develop with regular use, so it is not for ongoing insomnia. Never combine it with alcohol or other sedatives, and store it well out of reach of children.
