Chlorpheniramine, which appears on some packs as chlorophenramine, is a first generation antihistamine. It blocks histamine to relieve allergy symptoms and also causes drowsiness, which is why it features in night time cold preparations.

What Chlorpheniramine Is Used For

Allergic reactions, as part of treatment
Combination cold and flu remedies

Dry mouth and throat
Blurred vision
Difficulty passing urine in older men

Precautions

Do not drive or drink alcohol until you know how it affects you. Older adults are more prone to confusion, falls and urinary retention with it, and non sedating antihistamines are usually a better choice for them. Check the labels of any other cold products you are taking so the same ingredient is not doubled up.
