Cycloserine is an antibiotic kept in reserve for tuberculosis that has stopped responding to first line drugs. It is always used as part of a combination regimen supervised by a TB specialist, never on its own.

What Cycloserine Is Used For

Multidrug resistant tuberculosis
TB where first line medicines cannot be tolerated
Certain urinary infections, rarely and on specialist advice

Common Side Effects

Headache and dizziness
Drowsiness or difficulty concentrating
Mood changes, irritability or low mood
Tingling in the hands and feet

Precautions

Vitamin B6 is usually given alongside to protect the nerves. Alcohol must be avoided, as it raises the risk of fits. Any new depression, confusion, aggression or thoughts of self harm must be reported at once. Doses are adjusted for kidney function, and the full regimen has to be completed to prevent further resistance.
