Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor for type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood sugar by helping the kidneys remove extra glucose in the urine, and also has benefits for the heart and kidneys.

What Dapagliflozin Is Used For

  • Type 2 diabetes in adults
  • Heart failure
  • Chronic kidney disease, on specialist advice

Common Side Effects

  • Genital or urinary fungal infections
  • Passing urine more often
  • Thirst

Precautions

Drink enough water and keep up personal hygiene, as the extra sugar in the urine makes thrush and urinary infections more likely. Seek help urgently if you feel very unwell with nausea, vomiting or deep breathing, even with a normal sugar reading. This medicine is usually paused before surgery or during serious illness.
