This is an artemisinin based combination treatment. Dihydroartemisinin clears the malaria parasite rapidly, and piperaquine stays in the body for weeks to finish off what remains, which is what prevents the infection coming back.

Precautions

It is taken on an empty stomach, since food increases absorption and the risk of heart rhythm effects. Tell your doctor about heart conditions or any medicine that affects rhythm. Malaria should be confirmed with a test, and the full course completed even after the fever breaks. Fever that returns, confusion, or inability to keep tablets down needs urgent medical care.
