Dipyrone, also known as metamizole, relieves pain, brings down fever and eases spasm in smooth muscle. It is effective, particularly for colicky pain, but it carries a rare risk of a severe drop in white blood cells, which is why several countries have withdrawn it.

What Dipyrone Is Used For

Moderate to severe pain
Colicky pain from the kidney, gallbladder or gut
High fever not responding to other measures
Pain after procedures, on medical advice

Common Side Effects

Low blood pressure, particularly with injection
Nausea
Skin rash
Sweating

Precautions

Stop the medicine and get an urgent blood count if you develop fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers or feel suddenly unwell, since these can signal a fall in white cells. It is meant for short courses under medical direction, not for everyday aches, and paracetamol or an anti inflammatory is usually the safer first choice.
