DONEPEZIL
Donepezil slows the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in memory that runs low in Alzheimer disease. It does not stop the disease, but for many people it eases symptoms and helps daily function for a period.
What Donepezil Is Used For
- Mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer disease
- Memory, attention and daily living difficulties in dementia
- Some other forms of dementia, on specialist advice
Common Side Effects
- Nausea, loss of appetite and loose motions
- Vivid dreams and disturbed sleep
- Muscle cramps
- Slow heartbeat or dizziness
Precautions
Side effects are worst in the first weeks and usually settle, which is why doses are increased slowly. Taking it in the evening can reduce nausea, though vivid dreams may then push it back to the morning. Tell your doctor about heart rhythm problems, fainting, asthma or stomach ulcers. Family members should watch for falls and report any fainting episode.
