Ferrous bisglycinate is a chelated iron, meaning the iron is held within an amino acid structure. That form is absorbed through a different route to the traditional iron salts, which is why it is gentler on the stomach.

What Ferrous Bisglycinate Is Used For

  • Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia
  • Iron supplementation in pregnancy
  • Children and adults who cannot tolerate ordinary iron tablets
  • Maintaining iron stores after treatment

Common Side Effects

  • Darker stools, which are harmless
  • Mild nausea
  • Occasional constipation
  • Stomach discomfort

Precautions

Take it with vitamin C or citrus juice, and keep it a couple of hours away from tea, milk, calcium and antacids. Treatment usually continues for around three months after the blood count normalises, so that stores refill. Confirm anaemia with a blood test rather than assuming it. Store all iron products where children cannot reach them.
