Fruit salts are effervescent powders that fizz in water and neutralise stomach acid, usually with sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. They act quickly on heartburn and the heaviness that follows a large or rich meal.

What You Will Find Here

  • Plain and flavoured effervescent sachets and bottles
  • Antacid granules for heartburn and acidity
  • Combination products with a mild laxative or antiflatulent effect

Who They Suit

  • Occasional heartburn, acidity and bloating
  • Discomfort after heavy or spicy meals
  • Short term relief while diet is being sorted out

Precautions

These products carry a lot of sodium, so they are a poor choice for anyone with high blood pressure, heart failure or kidney disease. They are for occasional use. Heartburn several times a week, pain that wakes you at night, difficulty swallowing, vomiting or weight loss should be assessed by a doctor rather than managed with sachets.
