Gemfibrozil is a fibrate. It mainly lowers triglycerides and raises HDL, the protective cholesterol, which makes it different from statins that focus on lowering LDL. It is used when triglycerides are the main problem.

What Gemfibrozil Is Used For

  • High triglyceride levels
  • Mixed cholesterol disorders
  • Reducing the risk of pancreatitis from very high triglycerides
  • Low HDL cholesterol with raised triglycerides

Common Side Effects

  • Indigestion and abdominal pain
  • Nausea and loose motions
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches

Precautions

Taken with a statin it raises the risk of muscle damage, so report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, particularly with dark urine. It is taken before meals, and it increases the risk of gallstones. Alcohol, sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates push triglycerides up, so diet does much of the work alongside the tablet. Tell your doctor if you take warfarin.
