Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea. It prompts the pancreas to release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar. Because it makes insulin available whether or not you have eaten, meals cannot be skipped while taking it.

What Gliclazide Is Used For

  • Type 2 diabetes, when diet and metformin are not enough
  • People who cannot take metformin
  • Combination treatment with other diabetes medicines

Common Side Effects

  • Low blood sugar, with shaking, sweating, hunger or confusion
  • Weight gain
  • Nausea and stomach upset
  • Skin rash

Precautions

Carry fast acting sugar with you and never skip a meal after taking it. Hypos are more likely in older adults, with kidney disease, after alcohol, or with unusual exercise. Take care during Ramadan and discuss the timing with your doctor before fasting. Report repeated low readings rather than eating extra to cover them.
