GLUCOSE ANHYDROUS
Glucose anhydrous is pure dried glucose, the sugar the body uses directly for energy. It needs no digestion, so it raises blood sugar within minutes, which is what makes it the standard treatment for a hypo.
What Glucose Anhydrous Is Used For
- Treating low blood sugar in people on insulin or sulfonylureas
- Energy replacement during illness, heat or exertion
- An ingredient in oral rehydration salts
- Intravenous glucose solutions in hospital
Common Side Effects
- Nausea if taken in large amounts at once
- Loose motions
- A rapid rise and then fall in blood sugar
Precautions
Anyone on insulin or a sulfonylurea should keep glucose with them at all times. After treating a hypo with glucose, follow it with a longer lasting snack so the sugar does not fall again. Someone who is unconscious or unable to swallow must never be given anything by mouth, and needs emergency help immediately.
