Glycerin has several uses: as a moisturiser for dry skin and lips, and as a gentle laxative in suppository or enema form for constipation.

What Glycerin Is Used For

  • Moisturising dry, rough skin and lips
  • Relief of occasional constipation, in suppository form
  • Soothing minor skin dryness

Common Side Effects

  • Mild stinging on broken skin
  • Local irritation with suppositories
  • A feeling of warmth or urgency in rectal use

Precautions

For the skin, glycerin is very gentle and can be used regularly. For constipation, suppositories are for occasional use, not a daily habit. If constipation keeps returning, or comes with pain, bleeding or a change in bowel habit, see a doctor.
