Hexamine (methenamine) helps prevent repeated urinary tract infections. It works in the urine to stop bacteria multiplying, and is used for prevention rather than to treat an active infection.

What Hexamine Is Used For

  • Preventing recurrent urinary tract infections

Common Side Effects

  • Mild stomach upset
  • Nausea
  • Bladder irritation with high doses

Precautions

Hexamine is a preventer and does not treat an infection that has already taken hold – see a doctor for burning, fever or back pain. Drink enough water. Tell your doctor about any kidney or liver problems before starting.
