Horsetail is a plant naturally rich in silica, which is why it appears in supplements aimed at hair, skin and nails. It has also been used traditionally as a mild diuretic. Evidence for its benefits is limited.

What Horsetail Extract Is Taken For

  • Hair and nail supplements
  • Skin and connective tissue support
  • Traditional use as a mild diuretic
  • Part of combination herbal formulas

Common Side Effects

  • Stomach upset
  • Passing urine more often
  • Headache
  • Allergic reaction, uncommonly

Precautions

Horsetail contains an enzyme that breaks down thiamine, so long term use can deplete vitamin B1, and quality products are treated to remove it. It is not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with kidney disease or on water tablets. Hair loss with a clear pattern, patches, or with tiredness and weight change should be assessed by a doctor.
