Human menopausal gonadotropin, usually shortened to HMG, contains both follicle stimulating and luteinising hormone activity. Given by injection, it stimulates the ovaries to develop eggs and is used inside a supervised fertility programme.

What HMG Is Used For

Stimulating ovulation where the ovaries are not releasing eggs
Controlled ovarian stimulation for IVF and IUI
Supporting sperm production in certain hormone deficiencies in men

Common Side Effects

Pain or redness at the injection site
Abdominal bloating and tenderness
Headache and mood swings
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Precautions

Treatment is monitored with scans and blood tests, and the dose is adjusted by the fertility team. Report severe abdominal pain or swelling, breathlessness, persistent vomiting or reduced urine output without delay. Store it as directed and do not adjust the schedule yourself. The chance of twins or more is higher with these treatments and is discussed beforehand.
