HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE SULPHATE
Hydroxychloroquine sulphate began as an antimalarial and is now used mainly to calm an overactive immune system. It works slowly, and in rheumatic conditions the full benefit can take three to six months to appear.
What Hydroxychloroquine Is Used For
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Some skin conditions related to lupus
- Prevention and treatment of malaria in certain areas
Common Side Effects
- Nausea and stomach upset
- Loose motions
- Headache and dizziness
- Skin rash or itching
Precautions
An eye examination is recommended at the start and then periodically, because long term use can affect the retina. Report any change in vision, blurring or difficulty reading. Take it with food or milk to reduce stomach upset, and keep it well out of reach of children, as overdose is dangerous. Do not stop it during a flare without speaking to your rheumatologist.
