Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, the full name for hypromellose, is a plant derived thickener. It holds water against a surface, which is why it turns up in artificial tears, in vegetarian capsule shells and as a coating that controls how a tablet releases its medicine.

Lubricating drops for dry, gritty eyes
Eye surgery preparations that protect the tissues

Common Side Effects

Temporary blurring after eye drops
Mild stinging
Sticky lashes if too much is instilled

Precautions

As an inactive ingredient it is generally very well tolerated. With eye drops, avoid touching the dropper to the eye, and note the discard period once opened. Preservative free vials are better if drops are needed many times a day. Persistent redness, pain, discharge or reduced vision is not simple dryness and needs an eye examination.
