Hyoscyamine is an antispasmodic. It blocks the nerve signals that make smooth muscle squeeze, which relaxes cramping in the gut and bladder and also reduces secretions such as saliva and stomach acid.

What Hyoscyamine Is Used For

  • Abdominal cramps and irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bladder spasm and urinary frequency
  • Colicky pain in the gut
  • Reducing secretions before procedures

Common Side Effects

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty passing urine

Precautions

It is not suitable in glaucoma, with an enlarged prostate causing retention, or with certain bowel conditions. Older adults are more prone to confusion, falls and urinary retention with this class. Take care in hot weather, since it reduces sweating. Persistent abdominal pain, weight loss, bleeding or a change in bowel habit needs investigation rather than ongoing antispasmodics.
