INDAPAMIDE
Indapamide is a thiazide like diuretic. It helps the kidneys clear extra salt and water and also relaxes the blood vessels, and at the doses used for blood pressure the second effect matters as much as the first.
What Indapamide Is Used For
- High blood pressure, alone or with other medicines
- Fluid retention in heart failure, in selected cases
- Long term protection of the heart and kidneys from raised blood pressure
Common Side Effects
- Passing urine more often, particularly at first
- Dizziness on standing
- Low potassium or sodium, causing cramps or weakness
- Raised uric acid, which can trigger gout
Precautions
It is taken in the morning so sleep is not disturbed. Blood tests check salts and kidney function, especially in older adults and in hot weather when dehydration is easy. Report severe cramps, marked weakness, confusion or an irregular heartbeat. Keep taking it even though high blood pressure usually causes no symptoms.
