IPRATROPIUM BOMIDE NEBULIZER SOLN
Ipratropium bromide relaxes the muscle around the airways by blocking a different signal from that used by salbutamol, which is why the two are often nebulised together. It is a maintenance and add on treatment rather than a first line rescue medicine.
What Ipratropium Nebuliser Solution Is Used For
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Asthma attacks, usually combined with salbutamol
- Wheeze and breathlessness in chronic bronchitis
- Airway narrowing in hospital and emergency care
Common Side Effects
- Dry mouth and a bitter taste
- Cough or throat irritation
- Headache
- Blurred vision if the mist reaches the eyes
Precautions
Use a well fitting mask or mouthpiece and keep the mist out of the eyes, particularly if you have glaucoma. Rinse your mouth afterwards. Men with prostate trouble may find it harder to pass urine. If you are needing nebulised treatment more often than usual, that is a sign the condition needs review rather than more nebulisers.
