iron-containing protein
Lactoferrin is an iron binding protein found naturally in milk, and in high concentration in colostrum. It carries iron in a form the gut absorbs gently, and it also has a role in the natural defences against bacteria.
What Lactoferrin Is Used For
- Iron deficiency and mild anaemia, particularly where iron tablets cause upset
- Iron supplementation in pregnancy
- Immune support formulations
- Infant and childrens supplements
Common Side Effects
- Mild stomach discomfort
- Loose motions
- Constipation, less often than with iron salts
- Allergic reaction in people sensitive to milk protein
Precautions
It is gentler than conventional iron but also supplies less iron, so significant anaemia usually still needs standard iron treatment. Anaemia should be confirmed and its cause identified with a blood test rather than treated on assumption. Anyone with a cows milk protein allergy should avoid it. Check storage instructions, as some presentations need cool storage.
