Kaolin is a clay that absorbs fluid and binds toxins in the gut, and pectin is a soluble fibre that firms the stool. Together they have been used for generations to settle simple diarrhoea.

Precautions

The treatment that matters most in diarrhoea is rehydration, so oral rehydration salts come first and this comes second. Keep it at least two hours apart from other medicines, since kaolin binds them too. Seek medical care for blood in the stool, high fever, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration in a child such as sunken eyes, no tears or reduced urine.
