L METHYLFOLATE
L methylfolate is folate in the form the body actually uses, so it does not need the conversion step that ordinary folic acid does. It is prescribed where that conversion is thought to be poor, or where a more readily used form is preferred.
What L Methylfolate Is Used For
- Folate deficiency and the anaemia that follows it
- Support before and during pregnancy
- As an add on in some cases of depression, on medical advice
- Raised homocysteine levels
Common Side Effects
- Nausea or mild stomach upset
- Trouble sleeping in some people
- Irritability, uncommonly
Precautions
Folate can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency while the nerve damage from it continues, so B12 is usually checked or given alongside. Tell your doctor about any epilepsy medicines you take, as folate can interact with some of them. Pregnancy needs are specific, so follow the amount your doctor has advised rather than switching products on your own.
