Lactase enzyme
Lactase is the enzyme that splits lactose, the sugar in milk, into forms the gut can absorb. People who make too little of it get bloating, cramps and diarrhoea after dairy, and a lactase supplement supplies what is missing.
What Lactase Enzyme Is Used For
- Lactose intolerance in adults and children
- Bloating, wind and diarrhoea after milk, yoghurt or ice cream
- Drops added to milk for infants, on medical advice
- Temporary intolerance after a gut infection
Common Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Occasional stomach cramps
- Allergic reaction, rarely
Precautions
It has to be taken with the first mouthful of the dairy food, since it works on the lactose as it arrives, and a dose taken afterwards does little. Hard cheese and yoghurt are often tolerated without it. Symptoms that include weight loss, blood in the stool or ongoing pain are not simple lactose intolerance and need investigating, since coeliac disease and other conditions can look similar.
