Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. At low strengths it loosens dead cells on the skin surface and draws in moisture, which smooths and hydrates. At high strengths in a paint it breaks down wart tissue.

What Lactic Acid Is Used For

Dry, rough or scaly skin
Gentle exfoliation and uneven tone
Keratosis pilaris, the rough bumps on upper arms
Warts and verrucas, in salicylic acid combinations
Vaginal and intimate washes, to maintain natural acidity

Common Side Effects

Tingling or stinging on application
Redness and dryness
Increased sensitivity to sunlight
Irritation on broken skin

Precautions

Start every other day and build up, and use daily sunscreen, since acids make skin more sun sensitive. Wart paints are applied only to the wart itself with the surrounding skin protected, and are not for use on the face or genitals, or by people with diabetes or poor circulation without medical advice.
