LAEVULOSE
Laevulose is another name for fructose, a simple sugar. In medicine it appears in intravenous fluids as an energy source and as a sweetening base in syrups and some rehydration preparations.
What Laevulose Is Used For
- Energy supply in intravenous fluids
- A base in medicinal syrups
- Part of some nutrition and rehydration products
Common Side Effects
- Bloating and gas when taken by mouth in quantity
- Loose motions
- Abdominal discomfort
Precautions
People with hereditary fructose intolerance must avoid it completely, and this is important to mention before any infusion. Those with fructose malabsorption often get bloating and diarrhoea from it. In diabetes, fructose still affects overall carbohydrate intake, so syrups sweetened with it are not automatically suitable. Check labels if you know you react to it.
