LAMUFANTRINE
Lumefantrine is an antimalarial almost always paired with artemether. Artemether kills most of the parasites quickly, and lumefantrine, which stays in the body far longer, clears the remainder and prevents the infection returning.
What Lumefantrine Is Used For
- Uncomplicated falciparum malaria
- Mixed malaria infections
- Treatment in areas with chloroquine resistance
- Malaria in children, dosed by weight
Common Side Effects
- Headache and dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Palpitations
Precautions
Absorption depends heavily on fat, so doses are taken with milk or a fatty meal, and poor absorption is a common reason treatment fails. Complete every dose in the course. Confirm malaria with a test before treating. Fever returning after treatment, confusion, drowsiness or inability to keep tablets down means urgent medical assessment.
