Licorice Extract
Licorice root, also known as mulethi, is a long standing herbal ingredient. It appears in throat lozenges and cough syrups, in some digestive preparations, and in skin products for its soothing effect on irritated tissue.
What Licorice Extract Is Used For
- Sore throat and dry cough preparations
- Traditional use for indigestion and stomach discomfort
- Skin products for redness and irritation
- Flavouring in herbal and ayurvedic formulations
Common Side Effects
- Fluid retention and puffiness
- Raised blood pressure with regular use
- Low potassium, causing weakness or cramps
- Headache
Precautions
Licorice is not harmless in quantity. Taken regularly it can push blood pressure up and potassium down, so it is a poor choice for anyone with hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease or on water tablets. It is best avoided in pregnancy. Occasional use in a lozenge is a different matter from taking a concentrated extract every day.
