LIQUID PARAFFIN
Liquid paraffin is a refined mineral oil. Taken by mouth it coats the stool so it passes more easily, and applied to skin it forms a layer that holds moisture in. The same ingredient appears in laxative emulsions, eye ointments and moisturisers.
What Liquid Paraffin Is Used For
- Constipation, as a stool softening laxative
- Softening hard stool before or after certain procedures
- Very dry skin and eczema, as an emollient
- An ingredient in some eye lubricants and ear wax drops
Common Side Effects
- Oily leakage from the back passage
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea with the taste of the oral emulsion
Precautions
Do not take it lying down or just before bed, because breathing in even a small amount of the oil can inflame the lungs. It is not suitable for infants, the bedbound or anyone with swallowing difficulty. Long term daily use can reduce the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K, so it is meant for short courses.
