LOSARTAN
Losartan blocks the receptor for angiotensin II, the hormone that tightens blood vessels. The arteries relax, blood pressure falls, and the pressure inside the kidney filters drops too, which is why it is favoured in diabetes.
What Losartan Is Used For
- High blood pressure
- Protecting the kidneys in diabetes with protein in the urine
- Heart failure, in selected patients
- Reducing stroke risk with an enlarged heart muscle
Common Side Effects
- Dizziness, particularly with the first doses
- Raised potassium
- Tiredness
- Headache
Precautions
It must not be used in pregnancy, and women planning a pregnancy should discuss switching. Kidney function and potassium are checked with blood tests after starting and periodically. Avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes unless approved. Unlike ACE inhibitors it rarely causes a dry cough, which is why many people are switched to it.
