Magnesium chloride is a readily absorbed magnesium salt. Magnesium is needed for muscle and nerve function, heart rhythm and hundreds of enzyme reactions, and levels can fall with poor diet, prolonged diarrhoea, water tablets or heavy alcohol use.

What Magnesium Chloride Is Used For

  • Low magnesium levels
  • Muscle cramps and twitching linked to deficiency
  • Supplementation alongside diuretics or after prolonged vomiting
  • Topical and bath preparations for muscle comfort

Common Side Effects

  • Loose motions, the most common complaint
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea

Precautions

People with kidney disease clear magnesium poorly and can build up dangerous levels, so they must not supplement without medical advice. Magnesium reduces the absorption of some antibiotics and thyroid tablets, so those are spaced a few hours apart. Cramps that persist deserve a proper check, since low calcium, potassium or a nerve problem can cause the same thing.
