MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE
Magnesium hydroxide has two effects that depend on the amount taken. A small amount neutralises stomach acid, and a larger amount draws water into the bowel and acts as a laxative, which is the basis of milk of magnesia.
What Magnesium Hydroxide Is Used For
- Heartburn, acidity and indigestion
- Occasional constipation
- Combination antacids, paired with aluminium hydroxide
Common Side Effects
- Loose motions
- Stomach cramps
- Chalky taste
Precautions
People with kidney disease should not take magnesium products without medical advice, because magnesium can build up to dangerous levels. Leave two hours between antacids and other medicines, since they reduce absorption. Laxatives are for occasional use, and constipation that keeps returning needs a look at fibre, fluids, activity and any underlying cause.
