Methyl Salicylate
Methyl salicylate, the oil of wintergreen smell in most pain balms, is a counter irritant related to aspirin. It creates a warm sensation that distracts from deeper aching and has a mild anti inflammatory effect on the tissue below.
What Methyl Salicylate Is Used For
- Muscle aches, stiffness and back pain
- Joint pain and arthritis discomfort
- Sprains and strains after the first day or two
- Balms, sprays and medicated plasters
Common Side Effects
- Warmth, redness and stinging at the site
- Skin irritation with repeated use
- Rash, uncommonly
Precautions
Do not apply it under a tight bandage or use a heating pad over it, as that can cause burns. Keep it off broken skin, the eyes and mucous membranes, and wash hands after applying. Concentrated wintergreen oil is highly toxic if swallowed, especially by children, so store it securely. People allergic to aspirin should be cautious with salicylate balms.
