Modafinil promotes wakefulness without the full stimulant effect of amphetamines. It is a prescription medicine intended for diagnosed sleep disorders, not a study aid or a substitute for sleep.

What Modafinil Is Used For

  • Narcolepsy and excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Shift work sleep disorder
  • Residual sleepiness in treated obstructive sleep apnoea

Common Side Effects

  • Headache, the most common complaint
  • Nausea and reduced appetite
  • Anxiety, nervousness or trouble sleeping
  • Dry mouth and palpitations

Precautions

Any rash must be reported immediately and the medicine stopped, because rare but serious skin reactions have occurred. Modafinil reduces the effectiveness of hormonal contraception, so an additional method is needed during and for a period after treatment. It can raise blood pressure and heart rate. In sleep apnoea it does not replace CPAP. Persistent daytime sleepiness deserves a proper sleep assessment.
