Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist taken once daily, usually in the evening. It is a preventer, not a reliever, and is often used alongside inhalers.

What Montelukast Is Used For

  • Long-term control and prevention of asthma symptoms
  • Exercise-induced breathing difficulty
  • Seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis

Common Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Uncommonly, changes in mood, sleep or behaviour

Precautions

Montelukast will not stop an asthma attack that has already started, so always keep your rescue inhaler with you. Parents and patients should be aware that mood, sleep or behaviour changes have been reported with this medicine, including in children. If you notice anything of this kind, speak to your doctor rather than stopping on your own.
